Fostering Students’ Creativity through AI and XR-Enhanced Learning Environments

This workshop showcases three distinct projects involving college students, each highlighting creative and language learning experiences enhanced by AI and immersive technologies. The first project centers on interactive digital storytelling. Students created interactive stories on MyGPTs, inspired by the commercial mystery game Her Story. They subsequently produced teaser videos using multiple AI tools and visualized key story scenes through ThingLink. This project exemplifies how students collaboratively engaged with AI to perform creative tasks. My research based on this project investigates how AI tools supported students’ creativity, specifically across the four dimensions of originality, flexibility, fluency, and elaboration. I am currently extending this work through a multimodal analysis of their ThingLink-based visual storytelling. The second project explores British literature and culture in virtual reality (VR). Using the novel Around the World in 80 Days as a foundation, I recreated London in immersive VR and guided students to design their own virtual cities inspired by the story. Through both exploration and creation, students developed a deeper understanding of British culture and language while exercising imagination and creative design. My research examines the extent of their cultural and linguistic learning and how the technological affordances of VR facilitated engagement and creative expression. The third project involves AI-driven conversational practice in immersive VR (Immerse). Students interacted with AI-powered NPCs, engaging in authentic, situational dialogues. These interactions provided rich opportunities for creative language use and authentic communication. I have conducted several studies based on this project, focusing respectively on students’ speaking outcomes, learning engagement, and self-directed learning behaviors in AI-augmented immersive environments. Collectively, these projects demonstrate how AI and XR technologies can enhance students’ creativity, cultural awareness, and language learning, while also offering diverse research opportunities that bridge creativity, immersion, and human–AI collaboration.
